If we delve into the annals of American crime history in the 1990s, Jeffrey Dahmer emerges as a figure whose grisly deeds left an indelible mark on the nation’s psyche. Responsible for up to 17 murders, Dahmer’s name has become synonymous with abhorrent acts of violence. His chilling narrative has permeated various facets of popular culture, from comics to films, music, and series like “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” (2022), available for streaming on Netflix.

This series offers a harrowing portrayal of Dahmer’s heinous crimes, portraying him as the epitome of “evil” devoid of rationality. However, a deeper examination reveals Dahmer not as a malevolent force but rather as a troubled individual shaped by his upbringing. Raised in a cold and neglectful household, compounded by the pervasive racism of the era, Dahmer, who also grappled with his identity as part of the LGBT community, found himself suffocated by societal pressures. In this light, Dahmer emerges not as a monster, but as a byproduct of a flawed social structure, ultimately descending into the abyss of murder.

The saga of Jeffrey Dahmer serves as a stark reminder of the pivotal role childhood nurturing plays in shaping an individual’s psyche. Children reared in environments marred by violence, insulted word, or abandonment are predisposed to internalize these traumas. Mainstream and social media, replete with graphic violence, further exacerbate this phenomenon, normalizing aggression in impressionable minds. It underscores the imperative for families to cultivate strong bonds with their children, fostering an environment of love, curating age-appropriate media and offering counsel. Families become a sanctuary wherein children feel emotionally secure, thus children become emotional stability, appropriately control their action, inhibiting their mind and mitigating the likelihood of resorting to violence in adulthood.

However, the portrayal of Dahmer’s story in entertainment media, while shedding light on societal maladies, has elicited mixed reactions. Relatives of Dahmer’s victims express profound distress over the unauthorized use of their loved ones’ narratives, reopening old wounds and inflicting fresh trauma. Despite the series’ noble intentions of initiating discourse on familial and societal structures, it questions the creator of this series whether they think it thoroughly or not. While the narrative serves as a cautionary tale on the consequences of neglect and societal failings, it should not come at the expense of retraumatizing victims’ families.
